In 1797 progressive Member of Parliament, William Wilberforce, is taking a vacation due to poor health in the countryside. There is introduced to Barbara Spooner an idealist, who he quickly is infatuated with. While at first they both resist romance, they soon find themselves in love. When he regains his health and returns to the politics, he decides to take the controversial opinion to end the slave trade. He quickly becomes unpopular in the House of Commons, and faces great obstacles to ending the slave trade. Due to the stress, Wilberforce becomes ill again, and almost gives up his political fight, but his now wife Barbara encourages him to keep fighting. In their true love, Wilberforce finds the determination and strength to keep working to end slavery resulting in great social change.
