Anna Leonowens is an English schoolteacher who travels to Siam in the 1860s to teach the children of King Mongkut. She becomes involved in his affairs, from the tragic plight of a young concubine to trying to forge an alliance with Britain to a war with Burma that is orchestrated by Britain. Through it all, a romance develops between them and they must work together to overcome their differences. Anna helps to broaden the King's point of view, and he confides in her his vision to modernize Siam. Before Anna is set to leave Siam, they share one last dance where King Mongkut confesses his love for Anna.
